#Sixtybooks is now in its fourth year and we have had over 300 people sign up for this challenge. We are hoping to beat that number this year by spreading the word and getting even more people to make reading a part of their daily lives.

For those who are new to our fantastic group of readers, the goal is simply to make reading a regular part of our daily lives and encourage other people to do the same. It's not a competition and it's not just about the number.

For this year’s challenge, we will mostly be sharing our #SixtyBooks updates on Twitter and our goal is to share our progress, bookish thoughts/questions, and the fabulous books we are reading.

What do you have to do to participate? Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality and is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

It's summer and I have more time to read. I just finished the Soul Summoner series by Elicia Hyder and loved it. I just grabbed a few new ones for vacation that I can only hope I enjoy just as much. We leave tomorrow for Bermuda!
I'd like to say that I'm reading a ton this summer since I'm off and it did start out that way but then I got lazy so this is my last month of reading. Still not a bad total but I need to get back into reading and posting on a regular basis. While I really enjoyed The Darkness of Light and the Soul Summoner series, I only enjoyed the first book of Nevermor. The second was ok, and the third was just depressing. I wasn't happy with the wrap up.

What I am reading now:
I'm bringing the new Gina LaManna two book series with me on vacation. I can't even remember right now where I first saw Agnes and the Hitman or what compelled me to purchase it but I am so happy that I did. Agnes and the Hitman is a fast-paced fun read with lots of laughs, a few murders, a mob family, a wedding surrounded by chaos, a food column, and a hot hitman. Enough said.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Agnes Crandall's life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she's staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane, no last name, just Shane, and he has his own problems: he's got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn't so little, his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes's house, and his last hit was a miss, Shane's life isn't looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hit men show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and--most dangerous of all--each other.

Most of the books I gravitate toward are somewhere in the fantasy/mystery realm with a little bit of romance on the backburner. If the character has some attitude, even better. Every once in a while though, I look for a book that will just make me smile and feel good. Agnes and the Hitman was perfect for this. The characters were well developed and every one of them had just enough back story that you couldn't help but hope for each to get either their happy ending or their comeuppance. I found that I didn't want to stop reading so very little housework was done during the reading of this book. I highly recommend it.

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.

I think right now, at least 80% of the books on my Amazon wish list are not released yet. This is frustrating because I really want to read all of them now. I'm looking forward to all of them but I've picked two to spotlight here.
I definitely believe in DNF. Why force yourself to read something that you aren't enjoying? For me, trying to read something that doesn't interest me can put me into a reading slump. I just keep avoiding the book but don't start anything new either so it truly becomes a negative experience. There haven't been a whole lot of books out there that I haven't finished so I am going to add a little twist to this week's question...

1. Poison or Protect by Gail Carringer: I love this author. I have read all of the Parasol Protectorate and the Finishing School series so I was excited for this one. Very disappointed. I did not like the main characters at all and put it down mid-way through.

2. How to Speak Brit by Christopher J. Moore: I love all things British... except this book. Boring.

3. Dark Rites by Heather Graham: Again, an author I love. I've read every Krewe of Hunters book Heather Graham has written up until this one. I did not enjoy Dying Breath (the first in this set) as much as the others because the main female character was so incredibly annoying. When I picked up Dark Rites, I expected different main characters (as is Graham's usual pattern) only to find this character back in the spotlight again. I put it down after two chapters and hope that the next set in the series has a more likable main character.

4. The Arrivals by Melissa Marr: This was supposed to be a spin-off from Graveminder, which I loved! It just wasn't my cup of tea. I was looking for the same feels I got with Graveminder and they weren't there.

Books I should have stopped reading before I got to the end

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date and is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and plan to be reading over the next week. It's a great post to organize yourself. It's also an opportunity to visit other book bloggers, comment, and add to that ever growing TBR pile! Also, it is one of my favorite link ups because I get to spend hours browsing everyone else titles...

What I finished:

I didn't post last week so this actually reflects two weeks of reading. Of the four, The Restorer and Not If I Save You First were my favorites. The Ghost Chronicles was good but I was a little bit disappointed in the final Everland book, Ozland. It just didn't live up to the other two stories.

What I'm reading now:
I've had Darkness of Light on my TBR for a long time but I just haven't gotten around to picking it up and starting. I'm glad I finally did because I am really enjoying it. On my commute, I'm listening to Agnes and the Hitman. I was looking for a fun, light read and so far, this is perfect.
Stacking The Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Reading Reality and is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual.
I was able to do a bit of catching up on my #sixtybooks reading goal these last few weeks. I'm still not on schedule but I am at least a bit more on track. These were my books of May:

The Restorer by Amanda Stevens:
I really enjoyed Melissa Marr's Graveminder book and was looking for something similar. While this book wasn't quite as good, I still really enjoyed it. It is the first book in the Graveyard Queen series but it also wrapped up nicely as a standalone if you aren't looking to start a new series at this time. I loved the setting and the history of what it means to be a cemetery restorer. It was all very interesting and I would have loved even more details into that aspect of the story. The murder mystery was engaging, not easily predictable, and the pacing of the story kept me reading. I finished it in just a few sittings. The only thing that I felt could have been handled better was the relationship between the two main characters. I would have liked that to go better. It was a bit odd and the few moments they had together left a lot of questions. Great story and I would definitely call it a page-turner.

Ozland by Wendy Spinale:
While I enjoyed the first two books in the series, I just didn't feel like this one was up to par with the others. The story was interesting but I missed the POVs from Everland and Umberland. I just wasn't as invested in Doc and Gail compared to Alyssa, Maddox, Pete, and Gwen from the previous books. I wanted more of their stories and instead, they were only minor characters in Ozland. I was a bit disappointed. This doesn't mean others reading the series won't enjoy it or that it isn't well written. It is just my personal opinion.

Not if I Save You First by Ally Carter:

This was a YA adventure I picked up while at the bookstore with my daughter. I really enjoyed this one. It was a quick read because it is fast-paced and the little edge of your seat moments are constant. The main characters are the president's son and the daughter of the president's bodyguard. They start out with some backstory when the kids are young and then move quickly to the teenage versions and the danger they are in. I highly recommend this one for anyone 12 and up. My daughter has a hard time finding books she likes and even she is enjoying this one. A lot of fun.

I'm slow with these two. I am enjoying them both but I will be honest when I say neither are so riveting that I can't put them down. This week, I'm delving into the world of nonfiction. I love reading about unsolved mysteries. Not necessarily crimes, but more stories of the unexplained. I find them to be so interesting and I enjoy contemplating all of the different theories about what actually happened.

For as long as he lived, George Spicer was haunted by the sight of a worried woman running along the Nova Scotia Shore.

It was a summer morning in June of 1861, when Spicer was just a teenager with dreams of going to sea. He had been aboard a skiff sailing into Economy, a small fishing village shrouded by Acadian pines on the Minas Channel. In the town, locals watched the world's most powerful tides rise and fall as much as fifty-three feet in a matter of hours--a surge that impressed upon them a healthy respect for the sea. The ocean provided a life for many of them, and they knew it could just as easily take one away. And as the tide often did, on that morning George Spicer was carrying bad news.

Friends and Other Liars was given to me in exchange for an honest review. I was first attracted to the cover because it added to the mystery of the title but I was also concerned it might be geared to the YA genre. I do read a lot of YA but I was currently looking for something different. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, while the characters weren't always extremely mature, they were adults living their lives, trying to find their way and put their pasts behind them.

Summary:

To all my old friends:
So here you all are. Nice to see you can show up for a person once he's dead.
When Ruby St. James returns to her hometown, it is to the grave of her old friend Danny, a member of a group that was, ten years ago, Ruby's whole world. The crew made a pact back then: stay together, stay loyal, and stay honest. But that was before all of the lies. Because even friends keep secrets. They just don't stay secret for long. Now Danny has left behind a letter for each of them, issuing one final ultimatum: share your darkest betrayal to the group, or risk it coming out in a trap he has created. When past mistakes resurface, the lines of friendship blurb, and four old friends are left trying to understand what it means to lie to the ones you love best.

The beginning of the book packs such a punch that you have no choice but keep reading to find out what other secrets will be revealed throughout the story. Once the initial hook, the book takes the reader back to the character's high school days and, little by little, their true stories are revealed. Chapters rotate perspectives and story development does take some time but I enjoy books about people and relationships so it kept me completely engaged.

The pacing was decent and as the end drew closer, the tension grew until finally, all was revealed. There was a bit of a twist as well where we weren't sure whose secret was whose. Without giving away any spoilers, I liked the way the story wrapped up in the end. It could have gone a different way and I would have been a little bit more satisfied if that were the case but I'm ok with the closing.

All in all, I really liked the book and I would definitely read other books by this author.

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.

As usual, there are several I'm waiting for such as the newest Throne of Glass book or the next book in the Stoker and Holmes series. Most of the titles I am looking forward to are coming in the fall.

This is one that I am particularly excited about. I discovered this series a few months back and read the first two books, Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula. I really enjoyed them.

I was a little bit leery when approached about reading The Woman in the Window with my friends for book club. I had read The Woman in Cabin 10 and The Girl on the Train and I just wasn’t really satisfied with either of them. I was concerned that this would be the same type of story however, the only aspect of this concern that came true was the fact that the main character had a drinking problem, which seems to be a trend for female lead characters these days. Aside from that, I loved this book. The characters were real and I was invested in their well-being. The main character, Anna, was likable even though she was emotionally unwell and I rooted for her from beginning to end. I loved the fact that I didn’t exactly know who committed the crime right away even though I had my theories. I liked the fact that there was a twist that I didn’t see coming. I was also very excited when I found the clue that led us to the criminal right before it was revealed in the story.

Also, the pace of the story was steady and I found that I didn’t want to put the book down (even though I had to on several occasions). The story wrapped up completely with all questions answered and I felt satisfied when I closed the book. I immediately lent it to another friend and I can't wait to see if she enjoys it as much as I did.

This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!

One of my reading goals this year is to read more non-fiction so a few of my books are in this genre. I love unsolved mysteries so, to make sure I accomplish my goal, I grabbed three that I am sure I will enjoy. One is a reread and the other two are new.

I've read Dead Mountain but I recently watched a horror movie (I love horror movies) based on it titled Devil's Pass, and now I want to read it again. It is about a group of hikers that went climbing and never returned. They were found dead but the strange circumstances and evidence did not allow for a clear cause of death. I found it to be fascinating. I bought a hard cover this time instead of an e-book and plan to keep it on my shelf. The other two seem interesting and I'm looking forward to them.

I also grabbed A Treacherous Curse, which is the third book in the Veronica Speedwell mystery series. Crazy Rich Asians was a lot of fun. I would have never known about this author or series if a friend hadn't recommended it to me so I'm so glad she did.

Synopsis:

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry.

I was hooked from the first scene in the coffee shop where Nick asked Rachel to join him in Singapore for the summer and I stayed hooked all the way to the end. It helped that the narrator's voice was perfect for the story (I listened to the audiobook). I always know I am enjoying a book when I start getting emotionally involved in it, talking to it (or yelling), feeling angry, happy, etc... The characters in this book were written so well that I felt like I was going through all of the emotional turmoil with them. Their personalities ranged from down to earth and modest to crazy eccentric and completely out of control. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions and also wanting a few of the characters to be swiftly removed from their high horses. Mostly though, I rooted for the two main characters to find their happiness.

And yes, I grabbed the sequel, China Rich Girlfriend, immediately. I'm really looking forward to the continuation of this series.<table border="0" cellspacing="1" class="myActivity" style="background-color: white; color: #181818; font-family: Lato, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; table-layout: fixed; width: 100%px;">

First Chapter, First Paragraph Tuesday Intros. is hosted by Bibliophile By the Sea and is all about sharing the first paragraph or two from a book you are about to read. I'm currently reading a book that I really didn't think I was going to enjoy. It was recommended by a friend and isn't my usual genre but I am finding that the further into it I get, the more I am liking it.

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.

I have so many choices... some of which don't even have titles yet like the newest Throne of glass book or the next book in the Stoker and Holmes series. Two of the books I can't wait to read aren't coming out until fall. So sad to have to wait so long... :(

This is one that I have really been looking forward to as well that will be coming out in the late spring.
The Convent's Secret is the fifth book in the Glass and Steele series. It comes out on March 6, 2018 and I am really looking forward to it.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date and is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week. It's a great post to organize yourself. It's an opportunity to visit and comment, and add to that ever growing TBR pile!

What I just finished:

Last week, I finished two books, both print. One was an adult book (meaning not YA) titled, Almost Dead, by Lisa Jackson. I enjoyed it but it did have some slow parts where I wasn't completely engaged. A friend told me not to give up on her as an author though and gave me a couple of other titles so I will try another. The other book was YA and was a retelling of Peter Pan titled Unhooked. I love all Peter Pan retellings and this one was a lot of fun also. I read it all in one sitting. There were some holes where I think more time could have been spent with development but I still loved it.

What I'm reading now:

Right now, I have two books going (which is my norm), one audio and one print book. I'm listening to the latest book in the Magic and Mixology series titled Long Isle Iced Tea. I love this series. It's just a lot of fun. It's light, funny, and of course deals with witches and other supernatural beings, which I love. The print book is the final book in the Jackaby series by William Ritter, The Dire King. This has been a great series and I'm sad to see it end but I'm also excited to see how the author wraps it up.

Top Ten Tuesday is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week, a new topic is given and a top then list that fits the topic is created by anyone who would like to participate. Everyone links back to the original post on Jana's blog so we can take a look at other top ten lists and leave some comments, questions, etc. It's fun!

This week's topic

Top Ten Bookish Resolutions/Goals for 2018

1. Make more time for reading

For the last few months I have been neglecting my "eyes on print" time because of my kid's activities, etc. and I missed my #sixtybooks goal this year by four books. I need to get back to saving some time for reading each night if possible, even if it is only for a few minutes.

2. Make my book related Tweets more meaningful

I post a slow chat topic on Twitter for #sixtybooks on Sundays but I would like to spend more time Tweeting, replying, and really chatting with other readers on Twitter, rather than just liking, etc.

3. Vary my genre

This goal may not go very well but I would like to find some really engaging biographies, nonfiction, etc. that push me out of my comfort level. I love anything with a supernatural element so I get stuck in this genre a lot. Pretty much all the time. lol.

4. Post more on my blog

I always start the year posting several days a week and then it dwindles. I'd like to avoid that this year and post two to three times a week.

5. Re-organize my TBR lists

I have lists on Goodreads, Amazon, in Google Keep, and in a notebook. I need to make one list, delete the books I read, etc. It's a hot mess right now.

My other goals aren't as much of a priority and I don't want to overwhelm myself and then accomplish none of them so these are "if I can get to them" goals:

Try using the library more

Take time to just go to the bookstore to browse and sample

Stop worrying about what others think about me being an adult and reading 75% YA

Read more professional books without complaining and allowing them to deter my reading in general because I am procrastinating

Don't get down on myself if I don't want to finish a book I am not enjoying

Have a great week!
