Review: Wicked

Synopsis from Amazon:
Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans. Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart. Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her. But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

My Review:
The Lux series was my first introduction to Jennifer Armentrout and I loved all of those books.  I went back and forth on this one because I always have that worry about being disappointed when my expectations aren't met. Although it didn't quite reach the level of love I had for the Lux books, I did enjoy it.

This book was really fun to read and anyone who enjoys paranormal romance will have a good time with it.  It is a quick read and can easily be finished in an afternoon if you have the time to spare.  The characters are engaging and I grew to like them very quickly.  Tink, the brownie who lives with Ivy, is definitely the comic relief of the story and had me laughing out loud on several occasions.  He has this rough, sarcastic edge to him but you can easily tell that he cares about Ivy's well being. He was probably my favorite character in the story. The romance between Ivy and Ren was fine but I thought it was a bit too overpowering to the rest of the story.  If you like a lot of romance between your characters, you'll like this. Personally, I would have preferred more be put into the storyline itself.

The plot is interesting and easy to understand.  I was definitely able to predict what was going to happen but it didn't take away from the enjoyment of the story.  It was a page turner and I was completely engaged throughout the entire book.  Will I read the next book in the trilogy? Probably.  I do want to see how all of the characters end up.  I'll also read it just to see if all of my predictions are fairly correct, which I'm pretty sure they will be.

Review: Dreaming Spies

I've been waiting for Dreaming Spies for a long time.  It's funny because this series is so far off from what I usually read but I absolutely love it. There is just something about the relationship between Russell and Holmes that keeps me reading.  My only regret is that I now have to wait endless months for the next book in the series.

Synopsis From Amazon:
After a lengthy case that had the couple traipsing all over India, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are on their way to California to deal with some family business that Russell has been neglecting for far too long. Along the way, they plan to break up the long voyage with a sojourn in southern Japan. The cruising steamer Thomas Carlyle is leaving Bombay, bound for Kobe. Though they’re not the vacationing types, Russell is looking forward to a change of focus—not to mention a chance to travel to a location Holmes has not visited before. The idea of the pair being on equal footing is enticing to a woman who often must race to catch up with her older, highly skilled husband.
Aboard the ship, intrigue stirs almost immediately. Holmes recognizes the famous clubman the Earl of Darley, whom he suspects of being an occasional blackmailer: not an unlikely career choice for a man richer in social connections than in pounds sterling. And then there’s the lithe, surprisingly fluent young Japanese woman who befriends Russell and quotes haiku. She agrees to tutor the couple in Japanese language and customs, but Russell can’t shake the feeling that Haruki Sato is not who she claims to be. Once in Japan, Russell’s suspicions are confirmed in a most surprising way. From the glorious city of Tokyo to the cavernous library at Oxford, Russell and Holmes race to solve a mystery involving international extortion, espionage, and the shocking secrets that, if revealed, could spark revolution—and topple an empire.

My Review:
Holmes and Russell did not disappoint in this latest book.  If you are a mystery lover, this series is consistently wonderful and you don't get that repetitive feeling that can often occur when you get the fourth or fifth book.  Each installment is original and completely captivating.  Dreaming Spies is no exception and I read at every chance I got until the book was finished.  The relationship between Russell and her much older husband, Sherlock Holmes, is always a delight.  Mary Russell is consistently taught new skills by her husband but is also a brilliant and independent woman for her time.  She strives to be his mystery solving equal and sometimes even surpasses him.  Sherlock treats her as a partner and never acts the overprotective husband.  Each brings their own unique personality to the table and together they are truly phenomenal.

This is one of the few series where the writing is so well done and the plot so deep and intriguing, that I cannot solve the mystery myself.  There are many twists and turns so that, many times, I miss clues that only the most cautious eye will find.  I love this about these books.  I love that I am engrossed and trying to work things out in my mind until the very end, where I am almost always impressed with how the story plays out.  I find myself often having an "aha" moment along with the characters.  This was definitely the case for this book.

If you are a lover of mysteries and have a soft spot for Sherlock Holmes, you might want to give these books a shot.  Mary Russell is the main character but Holmes is prominent in most of the stories.  However, in my opinion, you absolutely must start at the beginning where they first meet.  Holmes, an aging detective losing faith in his world, and Russell, a young girl with her own issues, who stumbles upon him at just the right moment.  The first book is The Beekeepers Apprentice.  I go back to read the first few chapter often and It will always be one of my favorites.

Review: A Thousand Stolen Moments

A Thousand Stolen Moments by Connie Ann Michael was given to me in exchange for an honest review.  I'm not usually a fan of military romance stories but this was, in my opinion, well worth the read.  I thank the author for letting me have a copy.

Synopsis from Amazon:
Can you choose between fighting for your life and fighting for your heart?

When twenty-two year old Emme Sawyer joins a Marine unit heading into Helmand Providence, she focuses on what she does best: keeping her men safe. But, when the unit is hit by an IED, Emme realizes she can’t save everyone. With her humanity on the line, and her faith in question, she seeks comfort from Raven, her commanding officer. Soon, Emme develops feelings that don’t belong in a combat zone, where each step could be your last.

Raven keeps his emotions locked up tight, never allowing the men to see him sweat. But when Emme joins his unit, all bets are off; and the feelings he thought he left stateside begin to emerge. Knowing that the deserts of Afghanistan are the last place to start a romance, and the United States military’s view on fraternizing; Raven tries to deny his heart. Emme and Raven learn you can’t always choose where love finds you. And that sometimes, you just have to trust in God’s plan.

My Review:
As I said above, military romance usually isn't my first choice when I pick up a new book.  I'm always wary that it will be all romance and no story.  I enjoyed this one however for several reasons.  First, I liked the characters.  I liked who they were as human beings struggling through a time when each of them felt alone and scared, not knowing if there was a future ahead of them. Clearly, no one who hasn't been in these types of situations can ever know what it is really like, but I felt like the author did her research and gave a fairly realistic picture of what it might be like. Second, it was engaging.  Many romances can tend to be a bit overbearing in the romance department but I found myself not wanting to put the book down.  Unfortunately, I was sick so I was forced to put it aside for a couple of days but as soon as I felt better, I was right back to it so that I could finish.

Favorite character?  Definitely Tahk.  He's not really Emme's older brother, only her guard, but he represents the big brother every girl without one wishes they had.  He is the ultimate good guy. In my opinion, he was the glue that held the entire story together.  Sure, the developing relationship between Raven and Emme was fun too, but Tahk was the character I enjoyed the most.

There is definitely a bit of violence and gore in the book as the author tries to give the reader an idea of how horrific it must be in a combat zone but Emme represents all of the strong, courageous women we have in our armed forces.  I found my heart breaking for her several times in the story but also hoping for her happiness.

The book isn't overly lengthy so it would make a great weekend book.  I would completely recommend it.  Enjoy!
