Top Ten Tuesday, April 25th

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's question is:

Top Ten Things That Make Me Instantly
NOT Want to Read a Book

This is a hard question because it takes a lot for me not to want to read.  There are definitely some things however, that will deter me from picking up a book...
  • If I know it is a huge tearjerker. I don't mind crying in a book but I don't like to finish a story and feel depressed or cry through the entire thing. A sad part or two is fine but if it is more than that, I stay away.
  • If an animal dies. Not just any animal but an animal that is a main focus of the story. So, there is no Old Yeller or Love That Dog for me. No thanks.
  • If the characters on the cover are half naked with their facial expressions in the throes of ecstasy. I'm no prude but this just turns me off completely, even if I have heard the book is fantastic.
  • If the print is so tiny, I can barely read it. I have decent vision but I deplore teeny tiny print. Is is hard to focus and unattractive.
  • No meaningful relationships. It doesn't have to be romance, but some sort of relationship deepens a story. I find books without them to be bland.
  • Horrible grammar. Unless it is purposeful, I have no interest in books that have a ton of grammatical errors.
  • Books about sports. Boring...
  • Books with a ton of bad reviews. I may read it eventually, but not until someone convinces me that it is worth picking up.
  • Books of poetry. Just not my cup of tea.
  • Overdone love triangles. I don't mind it for a few chapters but please don't spread it over the whole book or series. I hate that.

How about you?

  1. Ugh I can't do poetry books either. It's not my thing at all. I can't stand love triangles or animal cruelty either. I really hate crying so I tend to avoid all books that look like they could break my heart. Tearing up heare and there is okay, but like you said, I don't want to be depressed when I'm done reading it. Great list!

  2. I agree on animal deaths. Old Yeller and Where the Red fern Grows did that for me. We read those in school (!) and I was like animals DYING?? Gahh. And #3- yeah if the cover makes you want to say "get a room" it's probably overdone!

Sports book and poetry kinda bore me too...

  3. Soooo with you on the cover thing! I can't stand those! Even some of the ones that are like this but a bit more "tamed". Definitely has me grabbing my hide-a-cover cover! LOL!

With you on animals dying too! There was this one book I read where the "fake" dog died and I was balling! Especially since he died "saving" the heroine, so to speak! I mean it wasn't really her dog, but it was still a dog in this bizarre alternate alternate reality world she found herself in!

Love triangles are a like-hate relationship for me. Sometimes I like them, they aren't bad and they do seem to "fit" with the story. But yeah, the whole dragging thing out is tiresome.

    Here's my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

  4. I don't do poetry or sports books. Just not my thing. And I need a book that is readable -- big enough type, thorough editing, etc.

    Happy TTT!

  5. I can get behind all of these. I find it very hard to motivate myself to read a tearjerker - I really don't see the appeal.

  6. I forgot about tiny print. I hate books with tiny print! It's why I haven't read Wild. My mom gave it to me, but that tiny print makes me bypass it every time I pick up a book. Great ideas!

  7. Dying animals is something I really don't like either! And horrible grammar is definitely one of them as well.

  8. I completely agree with the tiny print! It drives me crazy when I pick up a book and find that the font is almost incomprehensible- why!? I also put down books if I know animals are dying or if they have those half naked covers. Actually, I agree with a lot of these! Great post! :)

  9. The print one really gets me. Not just teeny tiny print, but also such extreme fonts that it is nearly illegible (especially on ebook). The grammar one annoys me to no end. At least have a trusted friend proofread it.
